Bristol City Football Club was founded in 1894 and has played its home games at Ashton Gate Stadium since 1904. The club has competed in the English football league system for its entire history and currently plays in the Championship, the second tier of English football.

The club was founded by a group of local businessmen and played its first match against local team Westville. The club quickly began to attract a large following and soon became a member of the Southern League.

In 1900, the club was one of the founding members of the Bristol & District League, which later became the Western League. In 1901, the club was elected to the newly formed Second Division of the Football League.

The club enjoyed success early on, winning promotion to the First Division in 1904. The club also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup in 1909 and 1911.

However, the club struggled in the First Division and was relegated back to the Second Division in 1913. The club then experienced a period of financial difficulties and was forced to sell Ashton Gate Stadium in 1914.

The club was relegated to the Third Division in 1920 and did not return to the top flight of English football until 1976. The club then spent the next three decades yo-yoing between the First and Second Divisions.

The club was relegated to the third tier of English football in 2007 but won promotion back to the Championship in 2008. The club has remained in the second tier of English football since then.
