The club has competed in the top division of English football for a record 110 seasons and has won the League Championship nine times. Everton has also been the runner-up in the League Championship on five occasions. The club has competed in European football competitions on four occasions, reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1985.

The club was founded in 1878 and was a founding member of The Football League in 1888. Everton won the League Championship in 1891 and have been the top-flight champions on nine occasions. The club has also won the FA Cup five times, the European Cup Winners' Cup once and the UEFA Cup twice. Everton has also been the runner-up in the FA Cup on seven occasions and has reached the final of the League Cup twice, winning it once.

The club's most recent major trophy was the 1995 FA Cup, which they won by beating Manchester United 1–0 in the final. The club's home ground is Goodison Park, which has a capacity of 39,572. The club's main rivals are Liverpool, with whom they contest the Merseyside derby.
