Southampton Football Club is an English professional football club based in Southampton, Hampshire, that plays in the Premier League, the top tier of English football. The club has competed in the top division of English football for a total of nineteen seasons, and has achieved two mid-table finishes in that time. Southampton reached the semi-finals of the League Cup in 2010 and 2012.

The club was founded in 1885 as St. Mary's Y.M.C.A. F.C., and played their home games at The Dell. The club reached the First Division in 1966, and enjoyed success in the 1970s, achieving their highest-ever league finish of second place in 1973–74. In the 1980s, Southampton struggled in the league, and were relegated to the Third Division in 1986. They regained promotion to the Second Division in 1988, and achieved promotion to the First Division in 1992 after winning the Second Division playoff final.

Since then, Southampton have been relegated from the Premier League twice, in 2005 and 2006. They returned to the top flight in 2012, and achieved their highest-ever Premier League finish of seventh in 2013–14. The club has also won the FA Cup once, in 1976, and have been runners-up on two occasions. Southampton have won the EFL Cup once, in 1979, and have been runners-up twice. The club has also reached the semi-finals of the League Cup twice, in 2010 and 2012.
