Reading Football Club is an English professional football club based in Reading, Berkshire. The club competes in the second tier of English football, the Championship.
The club plays its home games at the Madejski Stadium, which is also the home of London Irish rugby union club.
Reading are nicknamed the Royals, due to the history of the town of Reading.
The club was founded in 1871, and played their first competitive match in 1886.
Reading then joined the Southern League in 1894, and were crowned champions in the 1896-97 season.
The club then joined the Second Division of the Football League in 1900.
Reading then spent the next 100 years in the lower divisions of English football, before finally being promoted to the Premier League in 2006.
However, the club was relegated back to the Championship after just one season in the top flight.
Reading then spent the next four seasons in the Championship, before being relegated back to League One in 2013.
The club then spent two seasons in League One, before finally being promoted back to the Championship in 2016.
Reading then spent the next two seasons in the Championship, before finally being relegated back to League One in 2018.
The club is currently in its third season in League One.
